When too tired to be coherent, use props
I woke up at 3:30 today in order to trek into San Francisco from the ‘burbs for a live TV interview on mobile PtoP payments. Just ten days ago we published a press release on our most recent report on the subject, which is a here-and-now technology that delivers immediate potential for consumer transactions, yet faces some security perception barriers. Because today is my second pre-dawn awakening this week, my body was was feeling like some of the detritus on the side of the tracks that I passed by in darkness on the way in. Due to my sleep deprived state, I was momentarily turned around in what locals call “media gulch” when trying to find the studio, and a panicked-looking media coordinator was calling everyone to see where in the h*** I was! Exactly three minutes before on-air time he whisked up the elevator and into the hot seat. Now I love data and new industry technology trends, but at that crazy hour of the morning I knew I needed an advantage to be effective, so I used my wallet and Treo as on-camera props. I think it worked, because when I view my TV interview, I don’t see the halting guy struggling for words (or caffeine), but rather find myself wondering how long it will be before we all start to turn in our personal carrion-enclosed container o’ credit, debit and identification cards for a chip-enabled mobile payment device. Even at 3:30 in the morning I can get excited about that (as long as I have props).
