Market Watch - “ Google’s done everything right,” said Nick Holland, Payments analyst for Javelin Strategy & Research.“But the crucial missing piece is still that information in consumers’ line-item receipts. That’s the battle of mobile payments going forward. That’s the real next step, because the payment itself doesn’t really need fixing.”

Holland said he expects mobile payment systems to be more subtle in their peddling of deals and promotions. What companies really want, he said, is the access to line-item receipts. That will tell them exactly what someone bought, plus where, when — and all the other details known only to the retailers.

Banking Exchange - Javelin Strategy & Research calculates that only 1% of retail transactions will be made through NFC systems by 2019, compared to 9% of total online payments. “Power has shifted to the consumers with smartphones, and vendors must adapt and respond in new ways,” says Daniel Van Dyke, mobile research specialist at Javelin. “The merchant’s own app can be used to offset competitors’ shopping apps, by using targeted rewards, discounts, and loyalty points.”
